Technology on the site of the original memorial at the Harris Street entrance. The design selected was devised by Carmel Federico, a student in the Institute’s Architectural Draftsmen’s Certificate Course. Her design was chosen from memorial models and drawings submitted by about twelve students.

On Remembrance Day, 11 November 1983 this memorial to technical education staff and students who either gave their lives in, or who returned from, the two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam Wars was unveiled. The unveiling ceremony included wreath laying by the then Director-General of the Department of Technical and Further Education, Dr Allan Pattison, on behalf of the Department of Technical and Further Education, and the then College Principal, Mr John Williamson.

The memorial, initially known as the Peace Memorial and now simply known as the War Memorial or the Memorial, is a metal fabricated sphere, symbolising the world, in a sandstone obelisk denoting peace. This all rests on another sandstone base and symbolises the craftspersonship and technology of the day. The memorial has the words “Lest we Forget” chiselled into it. It stands about 180 cm tall between two flagpoles.

The memorial remained at the Harris Street entrance until about 1987 when completion of further building work and an increasingly busy thoroughfare required its relocation to its current site on the grassy lawn alongside the library.

Each year it is the site of the ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services. The ANZAC Day service is held on the working day immediately prior to 25 April while the Remembrance Day service is held on 11 November or the working day immediately prior to that date. From 1948-68, the services were organised by the Sydney Technical College Sub-Branch of the RSS&AILA (NSW). From 1969-ANZAC Day 1984 they were organised by a local Memorial Committee at the college, and thereafter by the Director’s Unit at Sydney Institute.
